La capitale più a nord del pianeta è una città moderna, abitata da 205’000 islandesi circa, che sono 2/3 dell’intera popolazione di questo paese sorprendente, fortemente in crescita e anni luce avanti rispetto a noi, nonostante il paesaggio ostile (e magnifico).
Dalla sua fondazione, nell’anno 870, avvenuto ad opera di Ingólfur Arnarson, la città, bagnata dall’Oceano Atlantico, ha attraversato mille traversie, vinte dal carattere forte e sereno tipico di questa gente, erede dei combattenti vichinghi e grandi navigatori.

Con un forte desiderio d’indipendenza e molta pazienza, l’isola si libera dal giogo danese, e il 17 giugno 1944 venne proclamata la Repubblica d’Islanda.
Nel centro della città, accanto a nuove ed avveniristiche costruzioni, sorgono edifici di tutte le epoche, perlopiù case in legno con giardino, normalmente rivestite in lamiera, come parecchie chiese (principale culto è il luterano), il parlamento e il duomo. Da notare il centro finanziario, con banche e uffici di cambio.
Nel 2011 è stato inaugurato il centro Harpa, grande struttura moderna in vicinanza del porto, luogo di cultura e tradizioni.
Il vecchio porto è centro turistico, dato che offre le connessioni alle isole vicine, punto di partenza per crociere nordiche di grande interesse, anche verso la vicina Groenlandia e alle isole immerse nella natura.
Vicino alla città si trova il centro Perlan, sotto la cui cupola si trova un museo modernissimo riguardante lo studio dei ghiacciai, e la loro lenta ma inesorabile scomparsa.
Atterrerete all’aeroporto internazionale di Keflavík, a 40 km. dalla capitale, servito da bus/navette ben organizzate. Vicinissimo alla città troverete l’aeroporto per i voli domestici con destinazioni interne (verso il nord e l’est) e le isole Fær Øer.

L’acqua è dappertutto, in calde sorgenti sulfuree dove bagnarsi, e nel giardino botanico cittadino.
L’isola è produttrice di energia geotermica, grazie alla forza dei vulcani sotterranei, che si dirige verso la città in lunghe tubazioni ad utilizzo di riscaldamento. La grande forzPa dell’acqua inoltre crea energia sufficiente ad illuminare le serre disperse sul territorio.
Su tutto il territorio le strade sono moderne, funzionali e ben curate e sono affiancate da larghe vie pedonali e ciclistiche.
Il Perlan, futuristico ristorante con cupola in vetro e panorama sulla città, è una visita obbligata. Si trova a poca distanza dalla capitale e potrete immergervi nel mondo dei ghiacci eterni, con la sua struttura visitabile da tutti, ma specialmente consigliata ai giovani che potranno rendersi conto dell’importanza del mantenimento del mondo polare.
Gli sport praticati in Islanda sono il calcio e i tornei di scacchi.

Ottimo menu variato di cucina tradizionale locale e internazionale. Sono riuscita a godermi un risotto mantecato con funghi a questa latitudine.

- Aereo: Aeroporto di Keflavik (KEF) a 50 km. dalla capitale
- Via mare: navi dalla Danimarca, dalle Isole Faeroe, o da Bergen (Norvegia)

- Centro storico, Laugavegur (via dello shopping) e Chiesa di Hallgrimskirkja
- Perlan Museum
- Sorgente geotermale di Nautholsvik
